Graduate Life

The Hertford College MCR is a warm and welcoming community. We inhabit the most outstanding and spectacular MCR building in the entire city: It is the 16th century Chapel of St. Mary at Smith’s Gate — a striking octagonal tower with views of the Bodleian library, the Clarendon Building, and Broad Street.

For quite obvious reasons, we students refer to it as ‘the Octagon’, or ‘the MCR tower.’ The Octagon is just one part of a space that hosts a tea room, a TV room dedicated to Evelyn Waugh (a Hertford grad novelist), and a study space called the ‘Computer Room.’
