Dear Hertford Graduate Freshers,
First of all, congratulations and welcome to Hertford college! Whether you chose us or we chose you, I hope you are looking forward to joining our warm, welcoming and laid-back community in September.
My name is Sam and I am a second year Biochemistry MSc student, as well as the president of the Middle Common Room (MCR) at Hertford. I oversee the smooth running of the MCR and represent you on a number of college committees.
If you have any concerns about college, or any ideas for the MCR then you can bring to me. The entire MCR committee exists to support you throughout your studies and enrich your experience of Oxford; socially, academically, and with regard for your welfare. The MCR is first and foremost a community of graduates – eating, socialising, (sometimes) living and (occasionally) even working together – we want you to get the most out of it. Throughout the year, we will host many events that will allow you to meet with the great wealth of graduates we have from a wide variety of academic backgrounds. All of these events are organised by students, for students, and there are plenty of ways for you to be involved. Simply showing up is a great place to start, but if you’re looking for something a little more involved, consider running for a Group Two or Group Three position on the committee; we’ll be looking for new people to join us in Michaelmas term. Also, if there are any specific events you want to see on the termcard then do let myself or someone on the committee know.
Freshers’ week begins formally on the 6th of October, and we recommend arriving by the 1st so you can get settled in, meet your new college mates, and enjoy the many events we have on offer. In particular, we will be running tours of college from the 29th of September to the 1st of October, followed by a visit to a nearby pub. There’s no need to attend multiple tours, but feel free to join us afterwards at the pub! Before each tour, the college Admissions Office will be running registration sessions for you to collect your bod card and some important paperwork. You have also been sent a draft copy of the timetable for Hertford Freshers’ Week 2019. A finalised copy will be waiting for you in your pidge when you arrive at college. The MCR aims to fill your time at Hertford with more than just academics; there are a wide variety of events planned to cater to all interests. Almost all events are free to attend. Some require you to sign-up or have a (heavily subsidised) cost.
On a practical note, if you’re living in college accommodation, you will be able to pick up your room keys from the Lodge at the main college site on Catte Street at any time. If you have any questions, need help with something or just want to say hi, then do reach out – it’s what I’m here for. Feel free to drop by anytime if you have a problem or just want some company – I keep my room stocked with coffee and Lindt chocolate..
I look forward to welcoming you to Hertford in Michaelmas term.
Hertford College MCR President
