I’m Helen and I’m a second year Egyptology DPhil student in the Department of Oriental Studies as well as the president of the Middle Common Room (MCR) at Hertford. This means that I am responsible for the smooth running of the MCR, listening to your ideas and concerns, and being your voice in college and beyond.
The MCR exists as a social and academic hub for graduate students at Hertford. We will support you throughout your studies and hopefully enrich your experience of Oxford. The MCR functions foremost as a community of graduates – we work together, socialise together, eat (and drink) together, and frequently, live together. All this leads to a strong community feel at college. The friendships you make here you will be able to take with you beyond Oxford. We hold a number of events throughout the academic year to get you out of labs, libraries and offices. The MCR is a great communal space to meet the people you share this community with and their wide array of interests, academic and otherwise.
Oxford is an incredible place to live and study. The opportunities here are endless, but getting involved in the MCR is one of the best ways to help you experience Oxford to the full. All our events are organised by students, for students. So if there are any events you would like to see in the termcard (and/or help organise) then please let me or one of the committee know!
I am looking forward to welcoming you to Hertford! If you have any questions or queries feel free to drop me an email, and if you would just like to say hi: I live in NB Quad at the top of the MCR tower and keep an inordinately large stash of tea and chocolate at the ready!
