Dear Hertford Graduate Fresher,
First of all, congratulations and welcome to Hertford college! Whether you chose us or we chose you, I hope you are looking forward to joining our community in September. You’ll (hopefully) find us a warm and welcoming bunch.
My name is Helen and I am a second year DPhil student in the Department of Oriental Studies as well as the president of the Middle Common Room (MCR) at Hertford. I oversee the smooth running of the MCR, and represent you on a number of college committees. Any ideas or concerns you may encounter in college, you can bring to me. The entire MCR committee exists to support you throughout your studies and enrich your experience of Oxford, socially, academically and with regard for your welfare. The MCR is foremost a community of graduates – eating, drinking, socialising, working (occasionally), and living together – and we want you to get the most out of it. Throughout the year, the MCR will host a wide variety of events that will allow you to meet the great wealth of graduates we have from a variety of academic backgrounds. All of these events are organised by students, for students, and there are plenty of ways for you to be involved. Simply showing up is a great place to start, but if you’re looking for something a little more involved, consider running for a Group Two or Three position on the committee. We’ll be looking for new students to join us in Michaelmas term; and if there are any specific events you want to see on the termcard, let myself or one of the committee know. The first thing you’ll want to do is join our facebook group, which will keep you up to date with everything from our events to the weekly hall menu.
If you have any questions before you arrive or as you settle in, or would just like to say hi, don’t hesitate to email me at email@example.com. My room is conveniently located on the top floor above the MCR space in NB Quad: drop in anytime. If tea and chocolate can’t solve your problem, then we can find someone who can.
See you in September!
Hertford College MCR President
