Welcome from the MCR President

Dear Hertford Graduates,

To all of the 2019/20 freshers, congratulations and welcome to Hertford college! Whether you chose us or we chose you, I hope you are looking forward to joining our community this year. To everyone else, welcome back; whether you’re joining us for the first time or have been at Hertford for many years, we have a great year lined up!

My name is Sam and I am a second year MSc student in the Biochemistry department (I spend my workdays making the internal machinery of microscopic cells glow so as to find out how DNA works..) I’m also the president of the Middle Common Room (MCR) here at Hertford. I oversee the smooth running of the MCR, and I represent our graduate students in meetings with college. At any point, please feel more than welcome to bring any ideas or concerns you have about college to me! The entire MCR committee is here to support you throughout your time at Oxford; socially, academically and with regard for your welfare.

First and foremost, The MCR is a community of graduates – eating, drinking, socialising, and living together (sometimes we even do some work together!) We want you to get the most out of it. Throughout the year, the MCR will regularly host a wide variety of events that will introduce you to the great wealth of graduates we have from a variety of academic backgrounds. All of these events are organised by students, for students. There are plenty of ways for you to be involved; simply showing up is a great place to start! If you’re looking for something a little more involved, consider running for a Group Two or Three position on the committee. We’ll be looking for new students to join us in Michaelmas term! If you have any ideas for events that you would like to see on the termcard, let myself or one of the committee know and we’ll see if we can make it happen! The first thing you’ll want to do is join our facebook group (www.facebook.com/groups/956867324658695) which will help keep you up to date with everything from our events to the weekly hall menu.

If you have any questions before you arrive or as you settle in, or would just like to say hi, don’t hesitate to email me at samuel.east@hertford.ox.ac.uk

My room is conveniently located on the top floor above the MCR in NB Quad; drop by anytime! If tea and chocolate can’t solve your problem, then we can find someone who can.

Looking forward to seeing you in September!

Samuel East
